Matthew Stephens is the Vice President of Design at The Zebra, responsible for leading the Design team and driving design strategy within the company. In his role, Stephens works closely with other departments to streamline collaboration at scale, in addition to infusing design-thinking into other aspects of the business. His greatest achievement at The Zebra has been shaping the way we create valuable products and experiences for our customers.
With over twenty years of experience, Stephens brings creativity and innovation to The Zebra’s design approach. He served The Zebra as Senior UI/UX Designer from 2016-18 and is the Co-Founder of DeviantArt, the largest online art community in the world. He’s previously held positions at various startups and mid-sized companies throughout the Austin tech community.
Stephens currently serves on the Advisory Board for Austin Design Week and is a member of The American Institute of Graphic Arts. He is actively involved with the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network, serving as event chair for Tap the Cure and providing design services to their campaigns. He is an outspoken advocate for the importance of design ethics and is involved with The Zebra’s many employee resource groups. He holds a SXSW People’s Choice Award and a Webby for his work with DeviantArt. His team has been recognized by industry publications including Invision and Dribbble for their design efforts.
In the past, Stephens was a competitive ultimate frisbee player. During his career he appeared in the world championship and played for many years with The Zebra’s CTO Meetesh Karia. Other interests include soccer, birding, and his cattle dog named Oscar.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in Radio-Television-Film with an emphasis on Digital Media from The University of Texas at Austin.
